Monday rounds move to the Saturday before every bank holiday. Grey and blue alternate fortnightly, glass every six weeks, and garden waste costs £49 a year.
Rushcliffe Borough Council collects four bins on a fortnightly rhythm, and the only part of the year that reliably breaks it is a bank holiday Monday.
If your regular day is a Monday, your collection moves to the Saturday before the bank holiday, not the day after. The next one is Saturday 29 August 2026, in place of Monday 31 August. That comes from the council’s own printed collection calendar, which is not on its website in any searchable form.
If your regular day is a Tuesday or a Wednesday, nothing changes all year.
The four bins
| Bin | What it takes | How often |
|---|---|---|
| Grey | Household waste that cannot be recycled. Food waste wrapped, lid shut | Fortnightly |
| Blue | Paper, card, cartons, metals, listed plastics. All loose, empty, clean and dry | Fortnightly, alternating with the grey |
| Green | Garden waste only. No soil, no food, not even windfall fruit | Fortnightly, same day as the blue. Paid subscription |
| Purple lid | Glass bottles and jars, any colour, empty and clean. Lids and labels can stay on | Every six weeks, same day as the grey |
The purple-lidded glass bin arrived in December 2025 under the national Simpler Recycling rules, replacing most of the borough’s bottle banks. Oven-proof glass such as Pyrex, mirrors, drinking glasses, vases, nail varnish bottles, window glass, microwave plates, spectacles and light bulbs must not go in it. (Rushcliffe Borough Council)
Find your own day with the council’s online bin day lookup. It is the only place that tells you which colour is due, because the rounds are staggered across the borough.
Bank holidays: only the Monday rounds change
Rushcliffe publishes no bank holiday policy page. The dates exist only on the collection calendar delivered to every household in November, and those calendars are also served as PDFs from the council’s self-service site.
Reading all ten of them gives a clean answer for the year to November 2026.
| Bank holiday | Collection moves to |
|---|---|
| Easter Monday, 6 April | Saturday 4 April |
| Early May, Monday 4 May | Saturday 2 May |
| Spring, Monday 25 May | Saturday 23 May |
| Summer, Monday 31 August | Saturday 29 August |
Three things follow from that, and they are worth knowing before the bin is left out on the wrong morning.
- Every Monday round moves, and every one moves earlier. All ten Monday calendars carry the same four Saturday dates.
- Tuesday and Wednesday rounds are untouched. Not one change appears on those calendars in the whole year.
- Thursday and Friday rounds only change at Christmas and New Year. Bank holiday Mondays do not affect them.
The Christmas moves are the one place where rounds on the same weekday differ. Some Thursday rounds went back to Monday 22 December and Wednesday 31 December last winter; others went forward to Tuesday 23 and Tuesday 30 December. Some Friday rounds moved to Wednesday 24 December, others to Monday 29 December. The current calendars run only to November 2026, so the Christmas 2026 dates are not published yet. They arrive with the calendar at the end of November.
What time to put the bin out
The council’s website says to have the bin at the edge of your property by 7am. (Rushcliffe Borough Council) The printed collection calendar says 6.30am. The two have disagreed for at least a year, so treat 6.30am as the safe figure.
In hot weather the crews start earlier still. Collections between Monday 13 and Friday 17 July 2026 began at 6am so that teams were not working through the warmest part of the day. (Rushcliffe Borough Council)
Bins are emptied only with the lid closed, and no side waste is taken. Flattened cardboard is the exception: leave it neatly beside the blue bin and it will go.
Garden waste: £49 a year, and no concessions at all
The green bin is a paid subscription running the financial year, 1 April to 31 March.
- First bin: £49.00. Each additional bin: £44.00, up to five per property.
- No mid-year discount. Join in December and you pay the full year.
- No concessions of any kind. The council says explicitly that being on benefits does not reduce the charge, and that village halls, community centres and churches pay the same.
- No refunds if you move out of the borough or stop using the service.
- Collections pause for a short period over Christmas and New Year.
You get a sticker for the back of the bin, and only stickered bins are emptied. (Rushcliffe Borough Council, fees and charges)
Bulky collections: the price depends on the item
Rushcliffe calls these “large unwanted items”. General household items are collected on Mondays, white goods and electricals on Fridays, and payment is taken in advance. Items must be out at the front of the property from 6am.
| Item | Charge |
|---|---|
| Single bulky household item | £25.80 |
| Each additional item | £12.80 |
| Fridge or freezer, under counter | £26.90 |
| Fridge or freezer, tall | £38.70 |
| Chest freezer, small | £33.30 |
| Chest freezer, large | £44.10 |
| Microwave | £25.80 |
| Washing machine, dishwasher or cooker | £26.90 |
| General electrical item | £26.90 |
The council’s own bulky waste page still advertises the service as starting “from £24.90”. Nothing on the fee schedule costs that: the cheapest item is £25.80. (fees and charges, large unwanted items)
What counts as one item is defined tightly. A bed, mattress and headboard is one item. A three piece suite is three, because the chairs work without the sofa. A bathroom suite is counted piece by piece. Cancel at least 48 hours ahead for a refund.
Mirrored wardrobes, glass tables and doors, mixed metal furniture, rubble, paving slabs and hazardous waste are all refused.
Small electricals: put them on the blue bin, not in the car
This is the one thing on this page that changed recently and is not obvious anywhere.
Since 3 August 2026 the county’s recycling centres cannot accept small domestic appliances. The banned list is long and includes kettles, toasters, microwaves, hairdryers, straighteners, electric toothbrushes, vacuum cleaners, irons, fans, radios, cameras, phones, clocks, power drills and electric lawnmowers. (Nottinghamshire County Council)
Rushcliffe’s kerbside service takes almost exactly those items. Small electrical goods can be left on top of the blue bin and are collected with it: kettles, toasters, irons, lamps with the bulb out, hairdryers, straighteners, hair clippers, shavers, electric toothbrushes, games consoles, digital clocks and watches, remote controls, torches, calculators, laptops, tablets, cameras and chargers, mobile phones and radios. (Rushcliffe Borough Council)
Wipe and remove data cards from laptops, tablets, cameras and phones first. Larger electricals, including microwaves, fridges and freezers, still need a bulky collection.
Household batteries go in any bag, on top of any coloured bin, any week.
Missed collections
Report a missed bin on the council’s missed collection form. Rushcliffe publishes no deadline for reporting one, which is unusual: many councils give you 24 or 48 hours.
If you simply forgot to put the bin out, the council will not come back. You wait for the next collection or take the waste to the tip. A missed garden waste bin is not refunded either.
Use the missing bin form if a bin has gone. Damaged bins are generally replaced free, unless the damage came from misuse.
Extra bins and assisted collections
- Extra grey bin: households of five or more permanent residents, or with two or more children in nappies, can apply. A waste audit follows. Call 0115 981 9911.
- Extra blue bin: available on request from customer services.
- Extra glass bin: available on request, though the council expects one to be enough on a six-week cycle.
- Assisted collections: offered where you cannot manage a wheeled bin. The council states plainly that if you live with an able-bodied person you will not be offered one. Garden waste is included if you qualify.
The recycling centre
The nearest household waste recycling centre is in the town itself.
West Bridgford Recycling Centre, Rugby Road, NG2 7HX. Run by Nottinghamshire County Council, not the borough. It has no steps or elevated ramps, which makes it the easier of the county’s twelve sites to use if stairs are a problem.
- Open every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
- April to September: 8am to 8pm. March and October: 8am to 6pm. November to February: 8am to 4pm.
- No booking needed. Pre-booked slots ended on 1 November 2021.
- You must register your vehicle first, and you can register up to two. Paper permits for vans, pick-ups, trailers and sign-written vehicles are no longer accepted; those vehicles register the same way as any other.
- A hire van needs 24 hours’ notice to customer services and the hire agreement with you on the day.
- “Man with a van” services cannot use the site under any circumstances.
DIY waste is capped: up to two 50-litre bags, or one item no larger than 2000mm by 750mm by 700mm, per visit, and no more than four visits per household in any four weeks. (Nottinghamshire County Council)
Glass bring banks that survived
When kerbside glass started, most bottle banks were removed in January 2026. Nine sites were kept:
- West Bridgford: Asda car park, Loughborough Road; Morrisons, Gamston; The Hook car park, Lady Bay
- Bingham: Newgate Street car park
- Cotgrave: Leisure Centre car park
- East Leake: Co-op car park, Main Street
- Keyworth: Bunny Lane car park
- Radcliffe on Trent: Health Centre car park
- Ruddington: Co-op car park, Church Street
Seven of those nine are council car parks, and most of them are free. Charges and time limits at each are on our parking page.
